GPU Invention & The CUDA Software Moat
NVIDIA defined the modern graphics industry in 1999 with the release of the GeForce 256, marketed as the world's first single-chip GPU. In 2006, CEO Jensen Huang made a risky billion-dollar bet by releasing CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture), enabling general-purpose software developers to program thousands of parallel GPU execution cores using C and C++.
When the deep learning revolution began in 2012 with AlexNet, NVIDIA's CUDA platform was the only mature, high-performance parallel computing ecosystem available. Over the following decade, CUDA became the de facto software standard across all major deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX), creating an insurmountable software ecosystem moat.
