Overview
OpenAI was created in 2015 as a non-profit AI research lab with an initial $1 billion pledge from technology leaders seeking to build safe, beneficial artificial general intelligence (AGI). In 2019, the organization created OpenAI LP, a capped-profit subsidiary, to raise the multi-billion-dollar compute capital required to scale large Transformer neural networks.
In November 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT based on GPT-3.5 and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). ChatGPT achieved the fastest consumer adoption rate in internet history, reaching over 100 million active users within two months and sparking the modern generative AI revolution.
